The Aegean Sounds, the Southwest's premier Greek Band, began in March 2004, the brainchild of Art Martinez and Jimmy Kapuranis. Realizing the untapped well of musical talent in the Albuquerque Greek community, Martinez, a longtime local musician, approached Kapuranis, who had been studying the bouzouki for years. They recruited other members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and a band was formed!

The band debuted in August 2004 at Yanni's Opa Bar, where they are now play regulary. They also play at the Olympia Cafe. They have played regularly for the St. Elias the Prophet Greek Festival in Santa Fe, N.M., and are the band for the St. George Greek Festival in Albuquerque, N.M. and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in El Paso, TX for the last few years. They played in 2006 for the 71st AHEPA Silver District #17 Convention. The band also makes regular trips Colorado to play for weddings and other social events . They were featured in the June 2005 edition of "Albuquerque, The Magazine," and will be featured at the 2010 Albuquerque Folk Festival for the Friday night "Greek" dance.
